When the second wave of #Hot Wheels iD dropped on July 12th, the car I was most excited for was the Speed Demons #’70 Dodge Charger R/T. As a collector of this #Brendon Vetuskey Designed casting — and most Hot Wheels #Chargers from this era — I had to add it to my collection. But it goes beyond just adding another #Variation of this casting; rather it was this rendition’s playful vintage “cartoonish” graphics and #Spectraflame Paint that spoke to me. The scheme is definitely one that will stand out in the casting collection family photo.

So that was back in July — 2.5 months ago — which is definitely old news in the Hot Wheels world. I had meant to do an update on this casting as I was eager to do a family photo, but it just never came to fruition. Fast-forward to just the other day, I decided to feature this casting on one of the two trading cards I am producing for the convention this upcoming week. So obviously some new photos were in order — you’re actually looking at the two photos I used! If you’re going to be in LA Thursday through Saturday, make sure you hit me up for a card.

Trading card ventures aside, it will be interesting to hear what you think of the #’70 Dodge Charger R/T casting collection. To me, it’s a great #Muscle Car casting that was a way overused as a #Fast & Furious go-to, but even that made for some nice variants. As you can see below, there have been some nice colors — outside of black — used on the releases. From the first two #Variations of its debut in the 2011 New Models series, to its latest #Hot Wheels iD release, most feature vibrant colors.

The #’70 Dodge Charger R/T was originally planned for the basic line, with the colored plastic base it came with. In 2014, we saw it retooled to have a metal base for premium use. Subsequently, we saw its first go-round in the #Entertainment line as Dom’s car in The Fast and the Furious (2001). Then, around this time in 2014, we saw its first and only convention release. This release is the casting’s most-detailed release (currently) and comes in metalflake dark blue, acting as a terrific tribute to its designer, Brendon Vetuskey — especially because it was given out exclusively to attendees of the dinner honoring Brendon at the 28th Annual Hot Wheels Collectors Convention. In 2017, the casting got the premium treatment again as part of the Car Culture / HW Redliners, wearing a Magnus Walker #Urban Outlaw Design. Inbetween 2012 and 2018, when the casting wasn’t being used for #Fast & Furious, we only saw it used once more in the mainline (2012), as the casting seems to be residing in the themed assortment part of the basic line, especially as of late.
