Car Culture / Gulf: ’60s FIAT 500D MODIFICADO

The Hot Wheels #’60s Fiat 500D Modificado returns for 2019 as part of the #2019 Hot Wheels #Car Culture / Gulf series. Its a casting that some considered the best new casting of 2017 — and this time, we get it in full detail! I think that was the only complaint about its 2017 #Car Culture / Air-Cooled release… that it didn’t have the front/rear detail. Otherwise, it was a fantastic release. 2019’s #Car Culture rendition has that detail the first release was missing, and it features the super popular #Gulf Racing livery.

Two releases in, I feel like the #’60s Fiat 500D Modificado is a casting I am going to want to collect. For being such a #Compact Car, it has loads of personality — no surprise considering it was designed by Mark Jones. Those beefy fender flares scream speed, power and performance; while that rear engine hatch (which is fixed to the open position) showcases that beautifully sculpted, air-cooled engine.

The artwork on the blister card was done by Hot Wheels Senior Packaging Designer, Julian Koiles and features the Gulf logo prominently behind the image of the car. The design seems relatively tame compared to Julian’s other #Car Culture series designs, BUT the more you look at it, the more you realize how genius it really is. Since this is the #Car Culture / Gulf series, the logo needed to be front and center. Gulf is an American pop culture icon hence why its popularity extends past just Hot Wheels. What says Hot Wheels more than Orange Track, right??? Well, check out that orange stripe on the side of the card. Notice how it extends down like a vertical drop and the car is essentially racing down it? So cool. This blog approves! 🙂

Lastly, lets talk about those graphics. You may think doing a racing livery is easy work for a graphic designer. On the contrary, I believe it to be anything but. It needs to be simple, yet something you’d see on a real race car of that genre. It also needs to be approved by the automotive licensor AND the livery licensor. It seems Hot Wheels Graphic Designer Steve Vandervate has been hitting home runs on everything he touches lately as this orange striping pattern definitely fits the era of this car. Those orange #Real Riders 4-Spoke Wheels look to be on fire against that #Gulf Racing powder blue body, and the gumball with the #5 in it is a nice nod to the 500D itself.

#Car Culture / Gulf is in stores now as it is the first #Car Culture series of 2019.  Don’t get caught sleeping on this little #Fiat as it doesn’t disappoint. The #’60s Fiat 500D Modificado is the perfect compact race car and is a must-have for any #Gulf Racing collection.

  1. I love this casting! I couldn’t stop buying the first release, just because it’s so cool. The proportions are perfect!
