Turns out the Custom Volkswagen Beetle from the newly released Volkswagen 5-Pack wasn’t the only variation found in the pack. While it was surely the most noticeable, the Volkswagen Type 181 from that same 5-Pack received a more subtle casting modification.

The VW Type 181 on the left has the “H” base code meaning it was produced in 2015. It also matches the casting design of the previous releases. The one on the right has the “J” base code meaning it was produced in 2016 (there is no “I” case code in Hot Wheels manufacturing). These are both part of the 2016 Volkswagen 5-Pack but as you can see, the bumpers are now plastic and part of the base/chassis.

So definitely a very subtle change but one worth pointing out. After combing through my “H” & “J” Volkswagen 5-Packs the other three castings have not received casting modifications.
