POISON PINTO RETURNS: Reimagined as a Hot Wheels Monster Truck

The #Hot Wheels Monster Trucks line is easily the most nostalgic these days. We’ve seen classic Hot Wheels castings reimagined as #Monster Trucks since the line’s inception in 2018. The Dairy Delivery, Volkswagen Drag Bus, Rodger Dodger, Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, ’70 Dodge Charger R/T, ’83 Chevy Silverado, Carbonator, and the Hi-Tailer Hauler have all been brought to the line — among quite a few others. Since it isn’t as easy as slapping a standard Hot Wheels body onto a monster truck chassis, Hot Wheels Designer, Brendon Vetuskey often has his work cut out for him when playing with an original.

His most recent triumph: bringing the infamous #Poison Pinto into the Hot Wheels Monster Trucks lineup. Collectors have been clamoring for a #Poison Pinto Monster Truck since Brendon posted the “What classic HW casting would you love to see be reborn as a HWMT?” thread on the Mattel Creations forums on June 28th. What collectors didn’t know was that Brendon already had one in the works!

The original Hot Wheels #Poison Pinto was designed by Larry Wood and was released from 1976 to 1985; then retooled as a fan favorite for HWC/RLC from 2003 to 2010. I absolutely love the Poison Pinto but the casting needed to be refined. It no longer fit within the standards set forth by the RLC. As the lead designer on RLC, I’m sure Brendon knew this too. The other line Brendon predominately works on is #Hot Wheels Monster Trucks (HWMT) and he has helped find a place for nostalgia in HWMT.

As you can see in the picture above (and below), Brendon didn’t change the Poison Pinto, he merely enhanced it. The body lines are sharper. The casting now features door lines, fender flares, even rivets along the roof. The signature #Blown Engine is there along with shape of the menacing body like the original had. Even those original “Poison Pinto” graphics and that light blue windshield return for the casting’s upcoming debut in 2024.

Had enough of the #Poison Pinto Monster Truck yet? I hope not… it gets even better!

A #Treasure Hunt variant of the Poison Pinto Monster Truck will also appear in 2024. This one features the same “Poison Pinto” graphics but is #ZAMAC instead of light green. To further play on your nostalgic strings, the fact that all HWMT Treasure Hunts have redline tires, will make you want to pair this one with the Super Chromes release from 1976. Thankfully, Brendon already did that for you…

Look for the #Poison Pinto Monster Truck to hit stores in the next couple of months. Both variants will be very popular with nostalgic Hot Wheels collectors like the ’56 Hi-Tailer Hauler Monster Truck was in 2023. My HWMT collection is growing rapidly, and these two will be in it soon. Thank you Brendon for sharing pics of these FEPs with us!

    • Thank YOU, Brendon! I can’t speak for all collectors, but I know quite a few that will be after these. I had to dial back my excitement just to finish writing this article. Hahahaha.

  1. like with the high tail hauler, it is nice that the pinto is being re-introduced to a new generation of kids, so they can make their own memories with it, while giving us old folks, a lil nostalgia. the HWC versions are the best ever made in my opinion, but the memories kids have of these, might spark interest in the originals and the HWC’s, in the next generation of collectors,
