Showcasing Hot Wheels new models is always fun — especially licensed #TV & Movie Cars. One of the latest #2020 New Models to be released is the #Ion Motors Thresher from the #HW Screen Time series. Technically, it’s from the #Fast & Furious franchise; but this one comes from the Fast & Furious Spy Racers cartoon that was launched exclusively on Netflix at the end of 2019.
If you look at the base of the Hot Wheels car, the #Ion Motors Thresher is named “Tony’s Car”. The reason for that is that this is Tony Toretto’s car from the show — a cousin of Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel). Tony and his group of friends are recruited by a government agency to ultimately become “Spy Racers”. If you have Netflix, check it out. In the meantime, let’s get to the car…
Over the course of the #Fast & Furious movie franchise, Dom became a #Muscle Car loving outlaw with much love for his “family” — an extended group of friends. The same goes for Tony. With the cartoon, however, it appears Universal City Studios decided to go with all original designs to likely avoid manufacturer licensing fees and requirements. The #Ion Motors Thresher looks to take a page from the #Unlicensed Hot Wheels playbook as it borrows styling from a combination of muscle cars. The Dodge Charger played a huge role in establishing Dom’s character in The Fast and the Furious (2001) so it makes sense that a similarly-styled “Thresher” does the same for Tony.
For as much as the #Ion Motors Thresher is a “tooned car”, it actually has some decent proportions and could be considered a realistic vehicle if it wasn’t based on a cartoon. The casting itself has some nice details to it and the graphics team was able to give the release its own set of details. Hood pins, window trim, and rear taillights are usually reserved for premium level vehicles these days, but this mainline car has them all. In addition to that, this is the first mainline car to ever wear #Retro Slot Wheels which have been used only once since the Cool Classics line was discontinued in 2014.
The #Ion Motors Thresher is the first of two cars from Fast & Furious Spy Racers (2019) that will appear in the 2020 #HW Screen Time series. The second will be the Astana Hotto driven by Layla in the show. If the show ends up being a success and the cars coming out looking this good, there is a good chance that kids and collectors will respond well to them. Look for Tony’s car to begin hitting stores soon as part of the #2020 Hot Wheels “G” case assortments.
