HW Art Cars: DRIFTSTA

Chances are, you’ve seen at least one of the many “unboxing videos” done by collectors where they open up factory-sealed cases and show you whats inside. There have been so many of these and everyone seems to like them that collectors have even expanded these unboxing videos to boxes they receive from online orders such as wins from various auction/sales sites. Well, the folks in charge of the Hot Wheels Facebook page decided to take it a step further and unbox the brand-new 2016 Treasure Hunt Set that went on sale yesterday at HotWheelsCollectors.com.

In this video, Hot Wheels Senior Packaging Designer, Julian Koiles, and Associate Marketing Manager, Jimmy Liu break down the set pulling out their favorites while talking #Treasure Hunts. Julian, gives us some insightful knowledge as to how the packaging was configured and Jimmy… well he decides to open one of his favorites from the set, the cult-favorite gem, the Night Burnerz Driftsta Super Treasure Hunt.

While that Night Burnerz release was released not that long ago as part of the #2016 Hot Wheels lineup, this year, we have already seen the #Driftsta be released as part of the #HW Art Cars in the #2017 Hot Wheels mainline.

In the 2017 HW Art Cars, the #Driftsta wears “sticker art” as it graphic medium of choice. Sticker art can be found in various pop culture circles and be seen at pretty much any local skate park/shop. If you look closer into this sticker art, you’ll notice that the Driftsta is now one of many Hot Wheels #Cars featuring names of Mattel Employees. “HWGRFX”, “D SHAH”, “JORGE”, “LIZ B”, “TYLR”, “COX” and “J-LIU” are all a part of this design. Jeremy Cox, graphic designer of this release, is the “COX” sticker while that guy that was blushing when he opened up the Driftsta Super Hunt in the Facebook video was J-Liu himself… Jimmy Liu. When asked about this release, he said this is only the second or third release he has seen his name on, with the first being the Team Hot Wheels Corkscrew Buggy from the recently released Snow Stormers 5-Pack.

This is now the 5th variant of this #Unlicensed Hot Wheels #Drift Car, which was introduced in 2015. Follow the #Driftsta casting tag to read more about the other two releases of it.

Lastly, see that “a” on the roof? Well, just like last year, it looks like the #HW Art Cars will spell out the name of the series with this year’s vehicles spelling, “HW ART CARS 17”.
