San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) Exclusive: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES PARTY WAGON

Now this is what I am talking about! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hot Wheels have finally combined — my childhood in a nutshell. The brand-new, #Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Wagon was released as a #SDCC Exclusive this past weekend at Comic Con in San Diego. Having TMNT and Hot Wheels combined may have been a long time coming, but this release certainly makes it worth the wait. The TMNT Party Wagon is a metal-on-metal casting that is comprised of a dozen or so pieces which includes all four of the Ninja Turtles themselves.

Yes, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo are all in there with there uniquely-colored eye masks. Raphael is driving while Leonardo sits shotgun. Meanwhile Donatello is (most likely) working on solving the problem at hand in back, while Michelangelo is seated on the swing-out blaster seat.

Like most #SDCC Exclusives, the packaging is top-notch. The #TMNT Party Wagon release utilizes the older-style “oil can” packaging that was developed for the 100% Hot Wheels line in the early 2000s. The revival of this packaging concept is a little bit of a surprise, but the effort put into the one-off SDCC pieces isn’t. SDCC is a great crossover event for Mattel as it allows the Hot Wheels brand to showcase all the products they have for the modern day pop culture consumer. Therefore, it always seems no expense is spared in developing a product that will incite non-Hot Wheels collectors to buy it. So, to add to the already cool “sewer can” packaging, there is a sleeve that goes on the outside of it to conceal (and then reveal) the vehicle, and an outer box to further protect and promote the product.

The back of the sewer can packaging contains a description of the release on what looks to mimic a caution label. It reveals that the #TMNT Party Wagon is designed after the one in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996) TV series cartoon, which is great for nostalgic collectors like myself as the logos are clearly from the #Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012-2017) TV series cartoon. The back reads:

PARTY WAGON. PULVERIZING PAVEMENT POUNDER. Cowabunga! Hot Wheels® re-creates the original TMNT Party Wagon from the classic cartoon show. This die-cast van pops out of a downtown sewer armed to the half shell with missiles, machine guns, and more. Raise and lower the twin missile launchers. Open the side door to check out your favorite band of heroes getting ready for battle — or the most awesome pizza party ever!

Beyond the fact that the #TMNT Party Wagon — which can also be referred to as the “Turtle Van” — brings back loads of nostalgia, it is to scale with your standard Hot Wheels vehicles. This #First Edition release is fitted with Hot Wheels #Real Riders Moon Disc Wheels. You can see below how the casting compares to the classic #Volkswagen Drag Bus casting and the newer Volkswagen T1 Panel Bus.

The #TMNT Party Wagon was one of those #SDCC Exclusives that I had to have from the moment I saw it.  The packaging is great, but most likely this one will stay loose in my collection so I can maneuver the #Moving Parts and display with the rest of my growing #TV & Movie Cars collection. Shout out to all the people at Mattel that made this happen and to Hot Wheels Designer, Chris Colangelo for designing this totally rad piece.

If recent history suggests anything, we could see the #TMNT Party Wagon in 2020 as part of the #Replica Entertainment line as we have with other #First Edition #SDCC Exclusives. However, I don’t see Hot Wheels carrying over the dozen or so pieces this one is comprised of, so chances are, we are most likely going to see this casting simplified. Most likely no Turtles. Who knows though. That is just speculation. Thats if we do. Either way, don’t sleep on the SDCC piece thinking you’ll wait for it to appear at retail. The TMNT Party Wagon is top-notch and a must-have for any kid who grew up watching the Ninja Turtles, playing with Hot Wheels.
