Buns of Steel … yep, there is officially a Hot Wheels car named #Buns of Steel. …What I wouldn’t give the see the look on the face of the person in Mattel’s legal department when that name came across their desk.
The ‘tooned burger truck known as #Buns of Steel is a brand-new, #2018 New Model which just started appearing (in the U.S.) as part of the #2018 Hot Wheels “D” case assortment. It is the latest in a group of #Food-Themed Vehicles produced by Hot Wheels.

Hot Wheels Buns of Steel from the 2018 Fast Foodie Series … also a 2018 New Model (side view)
Designed by Hot Wheels Designer, Ryu Asada — whose name just begs for him to totally design a carne asada truck — #Buns of Steel is done in typical Hot Wheels #’Tooned fashion. The concept of a giant burger on the back of a diecast truck however, has drawn the ire of a handful of Tomica collectors as they say that this vehicle steals the uniqueness of the hamburger truck that the Japanese brand released several years prior. NOTE: I have reached out to Ryu for comment, and will post his reply here.
Inspiration aside, the inner-kid in me just loves the #Buns of Steel truck. From the salt & pepper shaker exhaust pipes, to the fries that protrude out of the cab’s top, to the giant cheeseburger that sits on the back, this is one Hot Wheels vehicle that I had to have ever since spotting it in the Petrolicious Hot Wheels Design Center Article back in June. It does feels like this casting is destined to be in the next McDonald’s Hot Wheels Happy Meal promotion. With that said, you can’t help but notice the truck on the blister card is red versus the truck actually being orange — maybe the red is being saved for the promo??? Likely, no, but its sure is fun to speculate.
With this being the #First Edition of #Buns of Steel, its hard to gauge how collectors and kids will respond to this casting. My instinct (and based off of the collectors that have found it already), says that collectors will love the novelty of the casting, while I know that the Hot Wheels customizers out there just can’t wait to get their hands on that cheeseburger. Kids, yeah, they will probably like this one as well. As mentioned earlier, this is appearing now as part of the #2018 Hot Wheels “D” case assortments in the #Fast Foodie Series. Look for it now and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Why is hot wheels wasting our time with crap like this, when there is plenty of real cars that look cool.
One word: diversity. They also make a great variety of real cars too. I take it you won’t be picking this one up?
I think there was also a VHS called “Buns of Steel”. It was for toning your, um, buns.
Oh yeah, I remember. I feel like its only a matter of time before we see an 8-Second Abs car…. “8-Second Carbs” maybe?
I love this creative car! Fantasy cars have ALWAYS been the Hot Wheels tradition…to create fantasy cars as well as real cars. The classic Twin Mill, Torero, and Turbofire were ALL fantasy cars created by Ira Gilford. I too prefer the real cars, however, if Hot Wheels had never created fantasy cars, the Hot Wheels cars would have been no more creative than the boring Matchbox Cars of that time. It’s always good to remember too, that the mainline cars are geared for little boys. We adult collectors are just along for the ride…
What’s the story on the pre production blue version with a dark brown burger?
I just got a buns of steel hot wheel but no fries
Sounds like you have a nice little error there!
Why don’t they paint the burger ? sure it will look fantastic, instead of to look like a knockoff version of cr*bby patty from the chum b*cket.
Its a basic car. Painted the burger would require multiple masks, none of which are in the budget at the mainline level. But yes, I would agree that it would look fantastic. I have seen a few customizers out there do fabulous jobs out there.
great model! I’m obsessed with cheeseburger toys and this is fantastic! i found the second release in white, it actually took me almost a year to find this 1st release in orange (without ebay) its fantastic! i just purchased the Tomica Toyota Town Ace Hamburger truck in yellow- I love 💘 them both!!!!
