Collection Reflection

On the Rise: Why is the premium Hot Wheels HONDA ODYSSEY increasing in value?

Like you, I often see other collectors selling Hot Wheels via their social media outlets, on eBay, or at in-person events. I come across listings & prices that seem absurd — and in most cases, they are. Regretfully, I spend a lot of time looking these items up to verify. On the rare occasion, I do find a high price that is justified, and the Hot Wheels casting/release is on the rise.

Recently, I stumbled upon a listing for the #Honda Odyssey from the #2018 Hot Wheels #Pop Culture / #Street Fighter V series. The seller was asking $25 — I chuckled. Then, curiosity got the best of me and I began looking at sold values on eBay. For some reason, that release seems to be selling in the $20 to $30 range. Surely, if that one is in demand with its Pop Culture graphics, the #Bisimoto one from the 2018 #Car Culture / Cargo Carriers series must be setting new records.

Low and behold, the #Car Culture / Cargo Carriers release of the #Honda Odyssey from 2018 is selling for a tinge more. Now, I am curious as to why these have suddenly (to me) become valuable. Could it be that since the casting was only released for one year (2018), collectors are loading up on what may be the only two releases of the premium Odyssey? Its kind of a unique casting as you don’t see many Hot Wheels designed after a real-life 1,000+ HP mini-van.

The #Jun Imai Designed casting is derived from the basic version of the Odyssey — released as the #’14 Honda Odyssey — also design by Jun. The premium version has the storage compartment on top (as part of the window piece), roof rails, and a more stock looking body as the basic version has color breaks in front and back as the bumpers are part of the interior piece.

Truth-be-told, the basic counterpart of the premium #Honda Odyssey has also seen an uptick in value which is most likely caused by the fact that the basic casting (first released in 2016) hasn’t been released since 2018 either. This prompted me to reach out to Jimmy Liu, Marketing Director at Hot Wheels. Surely, Jimmy would know if there is a licensing issue surrounding this casting.

Much to my dismay, I did not get the conclusive reasoning I needed from Jimmy and he simply stated that the premium #Honda Odyssey has been slated in premium lineups since 2018 but for some reason or another it always seems to fall out. He didn’t go into specifics but added that it is currently slotted to return in a future lineup but that doesn’t mean it will.

Looking back at both 2018 releases of the premium #Honda Odyssey, I can’t help but wonder if I am missing anything. I mean, the casting is surely unique but is it so unique that its hard to slot and it gets overlooked? Jimmy said it has been slotted, so is it being pulled for something more sporty — or a casting more in demand? 5 years later, you’d think the tooling needs to get some use before the dreaded sixth year of non-use. After 6 years of non-use basic Hot Wheels toolings are known to go bad, and I assume the premium ones are the same way.

Either way, the more I look at this #Bisimoto #Honda Odyssey, the more I like it. The stock color on #Real Riders Exotic Wheels with a crazy window wrap on the back and full headlight/taillight detail… yeah, this thing is cool. I can see why the interest is there on this #Car Culture / Cargo Carriers release.

The rise in value for the #Street Fighter V #Pop Culture release is a bit more perplexing. I am a fan of the #Real Riders 4-Spoke Wheels, and was actually a huge Street Fighter fan as a kid. Blanka and Dhalsim — who grace the sides of the van in this “versus-style” deco — were actually two of my favorite characters from the video game. This release is weird and funky but I guess it works. If you’re a customizer, the wheels and casting are great donors.

I don’t think we really have any sort of conclusive answer as to why exactly the premium Hot Wheels #Honda Odyssey is increasing in value. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you purchased on of these lately? If so, what is it? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. I actually real liked this casting from the jump. I was shocked that in both premium sets where I live (yes we used to actually get premium Hot Wheels here before the pandemic, lol) these Hondas were always the last to be bought. Just the fact that they were Hondas alone usually meant good luck trying to find one, but there were plenty of these. I’m glad I have mine, and I hope they do release another premium soon! Thanks as always for the great article!

  2. I actually ( some 3 years ago) purchased the actual bismoto version. I would love to have the street fighter version. Plus. I see why it is in high demand. It’s very premium full of details.

  3. I always hunt for Honda hot wheels, I found the street fighter Odyssey about 3 years ago, I also found the NGK spark plugs Odyssey, and the Yokohama Odyssey, Hondas are the most fun to look for In my opinion

  4. Well, this is a fascinating turn of events! Who would have thought that the Hot Wheels Honda Odyssey would be the dark horse in the race of value increase? It’s like finding out your old comic book collection is worth a fortune.
The uniqueness of the model, coupled with its scarcity, seems to be driving up the demand. It’s like the Beanie Babies craze all over again, but with miniature cars. Thanks for the deep dive!
