Rarely does a Hot Wheels mainline car debut in limited edition form. Only a couple vehicles have debuted in the mainline with Super Treasure Hunt counterparts which — off the top of my head — are the Toyota 2000GT in 2013, and the #’17 Ford GT in 2016. It’s not a common practice for Hot Wheels to do so, and there is usually a reason why.

As is the case with the Toyota 2000GT, the casting was originally slated to debut in the 2012 premium Hot Wheels Racing line. The line was dropped by retailers and cancelled by Hot Wheels, leaving a handful of mixes that were never released. A similar situation happened with the #Porsche Taycan Turbo S as the car was originally slated to debut last year in the #Hot Wheels iD line, but with an overabundance of Series 1 warming shelves at retail and clogging warehouses of online retailers — mixed with a dose of COVID-19 — the bulk of series 2 was never released. Hot Wheels iD Series 2 should have had over 100 vehicles — only a fraction of that were released.

The result: the #Porsche Taycan Turbo S was moved to the #2021 Hot Wheels mainline in the #HW Green Speed series, and the iD car ended up still being used — as a #Chase variant.

The Taycan is Porsche’s first foray into the world of #Electric Vehicles as the fine folks in Stuttgart, Germany operated under the working title of “Mission E” for this project. The Turbo S is currently the highest trim level of the Taycan, having the best performance. It is only a “Turbo” by name however, as the all-electric car lacks an actual turbocharger. As a Hot Wheels car, it’s all about the looks, and suffice to say, this car has some great styling.

Comparing the standard #HW Green Speed release (below, left) with the #Chase iD version (below, right), you’ll notice that there isn’t a huge difference between the two. The metalflake cherry red paint on the common variant was an exception choice in color for this model to debut in, while the standard spectraflame red used in iD, super hunts, and iD chase pieces is a close representation. Holding the chase in your hand, you can see how the transparent #Spectraflame Paint allows light to reflect off the the ZAMAC finish underneath.

With this being the #First Edition release of the Hot Wheels #Porsche Taycan Turbo S, we don’t have any prior releases to compare this one to. Expectations are that as the popularity of Taycan increases, we should see this one in premium at some point — could an all #Electric Vehicle #Car Culture series be on the horizon?

The 1:1 Porsche Taycan comes in a wide range of colors. I count 17 for 2021 alone. This one saddles both factory “red” colors from Porsche as you could make the case that this was meant to replicate either Cherry Metallic or Carmine Red. That leaves at least a decade or so of unique factory colors for Hot Wheels to still produce.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. The #Porsche Taycan Turbo S has become an instant favorite, and its Hot Wheels story has just started. It will be interesting to see where interest in the casting goes from here!
