The classy McLaren F1 GTR returns to Hot Wheels Car Culture wearing Gulf Racing attire (again)

The Hot Wheels #McLaren F1 GTR is back in #Car Culture and, once again, is wearing a #Gulf Racing livery. This time, the #2021 Hot Wheels release wears a light blue paint that more closely resembles Gulf’s “Powder Blue”.

Why was #Gulf Racing chosen for the #McLaren F1 GTR once again?

I don’t know the actual reason, but there is a good chance it’s because the first release in dark blue was released two years ago in 2019 — despite some cars from that Gulf Racing series still hanging on the pegs of my local Target — and it was easily the most popular car from that mix. You’d be hard-pressed to find any of those hanging today, as collectors gobbled those up back in early 2019. #Gulf Racing has always been extremely popular with collectors and the new #Real Riders 5-Spoke Modern Wheels gave the Hot Wheels design/marketing team a chance to essentially reproduce the car with new flair.

The #2021 Hot Wheels #Car Culture release does more closely resemble the more popular, yet less successful 1996 version of the #McLaren F1 GTR #Race Car (chassis 15R) which placed 5th at Le Mans. The brighter orange #Real Riders are a nice touch as they mesh well with that Gulf blue paint, and the wheel design, in general, more closely resembles the real short tail race car. Also, unsure why this one wears #21 versus #34 — perhaps it’s from a different race that year?

You can find this brand-new release of the #McLaren F1 GTR at retail now as part of the #Car Culture / British Horsepower series. It is a great way to get a scale model version of a replica racing livery at a premium toy price: $5.49. Don’t want to wait?  You can pay a little markup and get it from Amazon or eBay today.

This McLaren fits excellent in any #Gulf Racing or #McLaren F1 GTR collection — or both — and is a must-have for any #Exotics fan.

  1. Any reason they use the casting with the plastic wing for this premium model? The metal wing version has been used recently for the mainline versions in the exotics 5 packs and would have been nice at the premium price point.

    • the metal wing is cheaper since it’s part of the body mold, having an extra plastic piece is more expensive but a lot more detailed, you can compare the two and it’s pretty obvious
