7/19/2019 — As anticipated, the Hot Wheels booth at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) is providing some great sneak peeks of some upcoming 2019 & 2020 products. What may not have been expected is the heavy dose of #Character Cars that are on display. There is no doubt now that the Hot Wheels Character Cars have seen incremental growth over the past few years with Mattel using the line to attract a more expansive audience to the Hot Wheels realm. SDCC has been seen as the yearly launch point for the new licenses in this line. This year continues that notion. @hwcustomchase on Instagram is on the floor at SDCC and was gracious enough to let me share his pics here. Enjoy!
The Souvenirs
The #SDCC Exclusives have always been a hot commodity at “The Con”, not just for Hot Wheels but for all brands attending this mega event. We have already posted an article on these, but one was announced after that article posted — in addition to a #Chase piece. The #Character Cars Mouse Droid from Star Wars was a cool little addition to the lineup. The chase piece comes in the form of the “Gold Mario” from the new Mario Kart line.
Street Fighter Character Cars
One of the welcomed additions to the Hot Wheels #Pop Culture line this year was the #Street Fighter license. Fans will argue that the characters in this video game franchise are as iconic as they come in terms of video games. Hot Wheels unveiled four at SDCC (M. Bison, Chun-Li, Ryu and Blanka), but you can expect to see more by the time they hit retail.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) Character Cars
You saw that Hot Wheels got a hold of the TMNT license through Nickelodeon when it was announced that the Party Wagon was one of the Hot Wheels #SDCC Exclusives for this year. At the con, Hot Wheels unveiled the TMNT #Character Cars line which will include Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo and the evil, Shredder.
X-Men Character Cars
Marvel characters are all over the #Character Cars line. However, only a few #X-Men characters have been done. Well, that appears to be remedied as Hot Wheels casts several more characters from the long-running, movie/comic franchise.
Batman Character Cars
The Batman #Character Cars are already out in stores. A couple of them like Harley Quinn and The Joker feature new “Action Features”. A very cool take on existing castings.
Disney Character Cars
Mickey Mouse and his friends are seemingly multiplying as Disney #Character Cars have been all over retail this year. A couple new castings were unveiled at SDCC including Wall-E, Daisy Duck, Pluto, and Olaf.
Star Wars Character Cars
The Hot Wheels team recreated the epic thrown room scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). No word on if Hot Wheels will release a break-apart “sliced” Supreme Leader Snoke.
Hot Wheels iD ’89 Batmobile
Lastly, @hotwheelsofficial had a contest on social media where you could screenshot the Hot Wheels iD #’89 Batmobile on your mobile device, and show an associate at the Mattel kiosk. In turn, they would give you the poster you see below. In the bottom-right of it is a NFC chip — the same as what is found in the iD cars — which unlocks the exclusive SDCC ’89 Batmobile in the game. Cool the see them work #Hot Wheels iD into SDCC.
