The #’70 Chevy Chevelle SS is back again for 2017 in what has become one of my favorite segments, the #Night Burnerz Series. Hot Wheels vaguely describes the lineup of cars as “Super speeders designed for night driving”, but to me, this series is the epitome of the car culture I experienced growing up — teens driving around every night on “the strip” racing, conversing and showing off their cool cars. Granted, none of the kids in my hometown had the high-end cars but that didn’t stop them from borrowing their parents’ cars from time to time.
The #Jun Imai Designed, #’70 Chevy Chevelle SS is perfect for the #Night Burnerz Series, so honestly, I was a little surprised it took this long for it to be included. The design of this “Chevelle Racer” lends you to believe that it would be the perfect car for night time street racing, whether it be a drag race or drifting with the tuner crowd. This release wears satin copper paint — which some collectors still denote as #Spectrafrost Paint, since the satin finish closely resembles that of the Cool Classics line that appeared at retail from 2013 to 2014. It has a way of grabbing a casual collector’s eye as the paint highlights the details of the casting, by giving it depth and dimension.

It seems as though collectors are finally realizing the beauty in this #’70 Chevy Chevelle SS casting as I’ve heard a lot of chatter about this one on social media and on the web. Collectors have been referring to it as the “Chevelle Racer” — so its not to be confused with the #’70 Chevelle SS casting first released in 1999 — as they are trying to track down the previous releases of it.
Every year, including its first release in 2013, the casting has seen multiple colorways, with the exception of its lone premium release last year. This bodes well for fans of the casting as this mainline #Night Burnerz Series release almost seems destined for another colorway before the #2017 Hot Wheels year is over. Look for this one as it brings its motion-based striping pattern and Hotchkis/Goodyear sponsor decals to the 2017 Hot Wheels “J” case assortment, in stores now.

This is one of my favorite castings overall and the satin orange is one of the best colors I’ve ever seen.
