The #Hot Wheels Characters cars are, by far, Hot Wheels largest expansion to the brand in a long time and they have been bringing in a slew of pop culture collectors and kids. While some traditional collectors are still seeing them as an eye sore as the pegs are always full at retail, they are by no means hanging around for long periods of time. Sure, they aren’t flying off the pegs (or being raided straight from the case) like the collector-focused Car Culture cars, or even new mainline cars, but the fact that they have generated a new kind of collector, already makes them a success.
Pairing up with several of the top pop culture brands has really given the #Hot Wheels Characters cars the push they needed. #Star Wars, #DC Comics and #Marvel have some of the most well known characters on the planet and seeing them translated into Hot Wheels form has made these new collectors really stop and observe how cool the Hot Wheels brand is.
One of the main characters in this summer’s blockbuster Captain America: Civil War was Captain America’s childhood friend, Bucky, who was taken by Hydra and transformed into the Winter Soldier. Hot Wheels designer Dmitriy Shakhmatov imagined this skilled assassin as an all-black #Off-Road Vehicle that carries over the Winter Soldier’s bionic arm as a front fender unlike any other.
As you can see, this is one cool looking truck that, while resembling a character, doesn’t look cartoon-ish at all. At the 1:64 scale, its sometimes hard to see all the detail in a Hot Wheels car so it is additionally cool that the Hot Wheels copywriter was able to pick Dmitriy’s brain to write the following about the Winter Soldier casting:
With broad fenders, a low and sleek cabin and oversized tires, this powerful off-roader navigates through covert missions with the furtiveness of Marvel’s mysterious assassin — Winter Soldier. Directly beneath the roof lies a hidden rifle, able to fire on targets with such haste that it can rarely be detected in time. The soldier’s bionic arm is captured in the vehicle’s front left fender, shielding the engine and providing enhanced communication tools to assist in military operations.
On a personal level, Dmitriy has been on fire this year designing the #Cruise Bruiser, #X-Wing Fighter, #Hulkbuster Iron-Man and now this! To me, it reminds me of the Rally Fighter by Local Motors … a company here in Arizona. While I am still waiting for Hot Wheels to produce the Rally Fighter, this is certainly a cool alternative in diecast form.
