Often times Hot Wheels releases a vehicle with mismatched wheels and a few collectors think they have found an error. While mismatched wheel errors on desirable castings may sometimes sell for over $10, the truth is, many errors do not catch nearly the same premium they did in the early ’90s and before. Ever since 1999 or so, Hot Wheels has released multiple colorways of certain castings in the same year. Variations have become abundant and I believe this to have a direct impact on the value of errors — along with the increasing amount of tutorials online on how to fake errors. Another factor is that quality control seems to be less and less important in the Hot Wheels world as well — or it could be the fact that we see more errors in this day and age due to the large amounts of cars we view over the internet. Either way, this is NOT an error.
Hot Wheels has become very good at keeping the mainline cars focused on attracting children, while focusing on collectors with the variety of premium lines available. The ’09 Corvette Stingray Concept below is just that — a mainline Hot Wheels car. Kids have quite the imagination and with the imagination comes lots of brights colors, wild decorations & sometimes even mismatched wheels. The Corvette below was released in the 2012 Thrill Racers / City Stunts Series. The City Stunt Series featured 5 vehicles with colorful Crash Test decorations. The other four cars included in the series were the Fast Fish, Citroën C4 Rally, Synkro & Jaded.
The Hot Wheels ’09 Corvette Stingray Concept has had some time on the silver screen as well. The 1:1 Corvette Stingray Concept was featured as Sideswipe in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. This appearance, in addition to the coolness of the car, led collectors to grab up a lot of the original release of the casting when it appeared with a dark silver paint job in the 2010 New Models. This cool casting has over 12 variations to track down including some real sharp looking versions in the 2011 Garage line and 2012 Boulevard line.
