Previewing the new AMAZON EXCLUSIVE 2023 Hot Wheels BLACK BOX

So… I did an unboxing, my first! Mattel sent over a brand new product this week: the 2023 Hot Wheels Black Box. This box will be an #Amazon Exclusive and retail for $24.99. Inside are 16 first appearance vehicles from the latest Hot Wheels mix — this one being the first of 15 for 2023 (mix A). Think of it as a mini factory-sealed case with no duplicates, and you still have a chance at a regular or super #Treasure Hunt. The link to buy these will be highlighted below once the pre-sale goes live on December 1st!

For those of you that prefer to simply watch the video and catch my live reaction, the unboxing video is above. For those of you that like a case report with pictures and descriptions, keep reading…

The first group are three of the four 2023 New Models from the “A” case assortment: the Nissan Patrol Custom (HW J-Imports), Ford Escort RS2000 (Retro Racers), and Draggin’ Wagon (Experimotors). The Nissan Patrol Custom and Ford Escort RS2000 each have great #First Edition decos, and are two really well-designed castings. I love how they both have some cool color breaks in the hoods. The Draggin’ Wagon is another take on the classic Hot Wheels Radio Flyer Wagon that was introduced in 1996. It uses the same moniker that was used for the older casting back in 2011. This new casting allows for you to place a mini figure in it.

This second group shows us the new 2023 releases of some previous favorites: ’87 Ford Sierra Cosworth (HW: The ’80s), 1970 Pontiac Firebird (HW Modified), and ’70s Van (HW Art Cars). We actually voted last year on what to include in the 2023 HW: The ’80s mini collection so it appears that the ’87 Ford Sierra Cosworth made the cut. The ’70 Pontiac Firebird returns in light blue after debuting with white and red variants last year — with the white being a replica of the car that won the Hot Wheels Legends tour in 2020. Lastly, an old favorite in the #’70s Van is back with a super cool “word search” deco. For collectors of this classic casting, it offers yet another cool variant to add to an epic casting collection that spans all the way back to the early Super Van days in 1975.

The final 2023 New Model (of the four in mix A) is the Dessert Drifter (Sweet Rides) which appears in the black box alongside the Sweet Driver (Sweet Rides) and the Airuption (Sky Show). The funny thing is that both series seen here, Sweet Rides & Sky Show, are names used on classic Hot Wheels series/lines.

The next grouping features HW K.I.T.T. Concept (HW Screen Time), Classic TV Series Batmobile (Batman), and Track Manga (HW Art Cars). This new variant on the HW take on K.I.T.T. — which debuted in 2022 — is the evil K.A.R.R. with the silver trim on the bottom. I pulled the common variant (non-super treasure hunt) of the Classic TV Series Batmobile which is recolored in 2023 in a brown color with bright orange windows. Lastly, the Track Manga returns for 2023 with a super cool anime/comic deco. For those that don’t know, “manga” in Japanese refers to comics which is very fitting considering the name of this casting.

The #Subaru WRX STi (HW J-Imports) and LB Super Silhouette Nissan Silvia (S15) (HW Modified) return for 2023 with new decos as well. The Subaru has a pretty simple 1-color deco on the sides, while the front has some headlight detail. The #Liberty Walk Silvia will undoubtedly be hot in this deco! I am super glad that I won’t have to search for this one at retail.

We wrap up with the last two cars in this box of 16 first appearance vehicles from the 2023 “A” case assortment: the Corvette Grand Sport Roadster (HW Roadsters) and ’17 Pagani Huayra Roadster (HW Roadsters). Both are new takes on two roadster castings. The black & yellow color scheme on the Vette looks good and the pearl white on the Huayra is something to behold.

Hopefully you’ve enjoy this case report on the #Amazon Exclusive Black Box (mix A) for 2023. I really hope these won’t be hard to get as this may be how I collect my mainline cars going forward. To be able to get them all online (without hunting) shipped straight to your door is a great deal for collectors that don’t spend several hours every week hunting the local stores. Hopefully there will be a subscription option that will be available in the future as there won’t be for the initial drop on 12/1.

Thank you to the Hot Wheels marketing team for sending this over!

  1. Absolutely love this. I too hope these will not be next to impossible to get. I’ve really considered giving up collecting many times do to the lack of distribution in my area, and the over whelming amount of collectors & resellers that swarm and hoard everything when ever we do get new stuff. Not complaining, I get it, “first to the pegs concept”, but like you said Brad, sometimes we can’t always be hunting or stalking pallets at the stores when they drop, and it makes it extremely hard to collect anymore.

  2. what time will the BLACK BOX go live..??? Just asking cause I’m in Europe and I have a feeling its going to be a long night checking at 00:00a.m. ……………..

  3. How will we know when it’s in stock and available? I just went on and it says it’s already out of stock, is this because they haven’t released it yet, or because it sold out already?
