Hot Wheels iD / HW Screen Time: JURASSIC PARK JEEP

All of the #Hot Wheels iD vehicles for 2019 have now been released — in some avenue or another. That makes sense as we are now into 2020 and the new #2020 Hot Wheels are hitting stores. 2020 iD should be coming soon, but before it does, there are definitely a few vehicles from the inaugural year of the line that I’d like to #Showcase.

The #Jurassic Park Jeep was a bit of a surprise when I first saw images of it a couple months ago. Jurassic Park (1993) is 27-years-old this year and Hot Wheels has never released any vehicles from the movie short of the LEO Hot Wheels (India) release of the Propper Chopper seen below. It was for the LEO Hot Wheels Collectors’ Club and never saw retail in the United States. Crazy, right? One of the highest-grossing movies in United States history and the Jeep, nor the iconic Ford Explorer, was released by Hot Wheels until now.

This #18 #Jeep is what the movie industry calls a “hero car” as its seen up-close with the main characters. Remember the iconic seen in Jurassic Park (1993) where we see the park’s first dinosaur — the Brachiosaurus — grazing by as Doctors Grant and Ellie exhibit an amazing sense of awe? Yep, that’s this Jeep. Not to be confused with the #10 Jeep that outruns a T-Rex or the #12 Jeep where Dennis Nedry meets dilophosaurus.

Those of you that know your Hot Wheels history, know that the brand had very little to do with #TV & Movie Cars before the mid-2000s. The entertainment license “floodgates” did metaphorically open some 10+ years ago, and we’ve seen some great pop culture Hot Wheels since. The #Jurassic Park Jeep and the Ford Explorer have been atop collectors’ entertainment wishlists since that moment but many collectors had figured Mattel chose Matchbox to handle the license exclusively as Matchbox seems to be all-in with the license the way Hot Wheels is with Fast & Furious. I would be remiss though if I didn’t mention that Hot Wheels did put out a series of five #Jurassic World character cars.

Yet here we are! The Hot Wheels team was able to get the #Jurassic Park Jeep made. Its placement in #Hot Wheels iD seems like a bit of an odd choice due to it having off-road tires in a line that has been proclaimed as one that focuses on track performance (ie. the reason why some iD cars were being redesigned with an up-sloped chin). However, knowing that Hot Wheels Designer, Phil Riehlman was the primary/lead designer on the Hot Wheels iD line for 2019, it makes perfect sense. Phil was able to implement his two new #Jeep designs into his dedicated line so the Jurassic Park Jeep joins the Jeep DJ-Xpress as Hot Wheels iD vehicles.

Being a #First Edition in the #Hot Wheels iD line has proven to be a blessing for the several cars that were introduced in 2019. Full-detail and #Spectraflame Paint looks great on every car — as it did with all the new models in the line. This #Jurassic Park Jeep has some amazing details which are highlighted by the fact that it even got the Jurassic Park license plates on it. The color looks very silver in nature, but the Hot Wheels iD app lists the official color name as Spectraflame Hilite Purple.

What will be done with the #Jurassic Park Jeep going forward?

Well, being that the casting is actually licensed by Universal & Amblin Entertainment, you probably won’t see it in anything other than a Jurassic Park/World deco. What you could see is this casting appear with less detail in the mainline and/or get a metal base and appear in #Replica Entertainment. Matchbox has found success in doing clean and “battle damage” versions of the Jurassic Park/World vehicles so Hot Wheels could always do the same. Until then, collectors can officially cross-off (or delete) the #Jurassic Park Jeep from the list of #TV & Movie Cars they would like to see from Hot Wheels.

  1. Got mine from Amazon yesterday. Spectacular! I truly hope they do the explorer as a companion piece,(would make a great RLC acrylic display offering) maybe re-release the propper chopper with “ingen” logos too.

  2. Can’t wait to receive mine! Oh Brad…any news on when the Fiat 500 i.d will come out? Missing ONLY that one and the Audi R8 from the “series 1”!

  3. Brad, sorry for the bad news, but the hoop arround the windshield is bent on yours… Should be straight. Check photos on Amazon or the box. Great write up, as usual!

    • Thank you. I noticed that too. Didn’t seem as bad when I took the photos, but now that I saw how it was suppose to look, I realize how bad it is. Fortunately, I have another on order.
