Last year at this time, we were greeted with the first couple assortments of #2016 Hot Wheels in the basic line. Among those, was the #’69 Dodge Charger as part of the #HW Flames Series — the 10 vehicles in this series were voted on by collectors via a poll on HotWheelsCollectors.com. This yellow colorway of the ’69 Dodge Charger exemplified hot as its yellow paint and orange/red/dark red flames definitely made it stand out on the pegs. Since this was part of the “A” case assortments, and we had 14 more assortments to go for 2016, it was definitely a good candidate to get a colorway variation at some point in the year. Given the popularity of the casting, and even with the very similar ’69 Dodge Charger 500 being released in the Night Burnerz Series, how could we not see a colorway at some point in the year???

Well, fast-forward a year later to November 2016. We are well into the first couple basic assortments of #2017 Hot Wheels. The recent Kmart Collector’s Day on November 12th had four special color #Variations appear in their #Kmart Exclusive 36-count cases for the event. In those first-to-market “B” case assortments, were a whole bunch of 2017 vehicles, with the exception of the four Kmart Exclusive colorways which were the final 2016 basic line cars.

Those 2016 stowaways included the black colorway of the #’69 Dodge Charger which most had already assumed wasn’t going to happen. It was a pleasant surprise especially because, as a collector of the casting, the vintage-looking colors looked great — and, of course, its always nice to add another variation to the casting collection.

This was one of the only times I loaded up on a Kmart exclusive color car, haha. I think I bought about 10-12 of them, planning for some sort of wheel swaps eventually.
