Hot Wheels Trucks: DATSUN 620

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together? … OR, in this case, a makeshift Hot Wheels series comes together? To me, its one of the reasons I love Hot Wheels collecting and more specifically, collecting the #Hot Wheels Race Team. There is no numbered sequence to collect as personal opinions govern what is and isn’t included. Its kind of like a Hot Wheels scavenger hunt across many years, series and lines, looking for vehicles that could be paired with each other.

A grouping of vehicles that I have recently become fond of is the “white Datsun pack” as I call it even though it involves a a newer Datsun (in the form of a Nissan 370Z). The three castings are coated in a simple, clean, white enamel, and feature varying red, blue and black graphics. To some its a stretch, but to me its the start of an unannounced series.

This “series” started in 2015 with the Datsun 240Z and the Nissan 370Z in the Hot Wheels mainline Then and Now Series. In early 2016, Walmart carried an exclusive Hot Wheels Trucks series which featured the Datsun 620. I was immediately excited as right away I identified the similarities and had hopes of finding the truck to place with the two cars. Unfortunately, the popularity of the Datsun 620 on the secondary market had many Hot Wheels profiteers seeing dollar signs as many raided the dump bins these came in, leaving none behind. I was able to find semi-fresh dump bins of the Hot Wheels Trucks, but the 620 was no where to be seen.

Since there was no real urgency in obtaining the Datsun 620, I decided to wait for the dust to settle and let the profiteers move on to the next new thing before I decided to purchase one online. Over the last several months, a few collectors reported finding large amounts of these on the pegs at their local Walmarts as people had been returning them after they failed to net profiteers any more of a profit. I was hoping one of my local profiteers would do the same but I wasn’t so lucky.

A couple weeks ago I was purchasing a few cars from an online seller on The Toy Peddler and after chatting with him, he decided to sell me one of these for $1 and included it with the other cars I had bought from him. At last, the unannounced series of three has been complete … for now!
