The new Ghostbusters movie comes out today and judging by the polarizing reviews out there, clearly there is a rift among the traditionalists and those with a more liberal view of reboots. Sounds a lot like Hot Wheels collectors — those whose adhere to the old brand standards and those who are more accepting of the changes. Though you may find yourself somewhere in the middle, that’s perfectly okay as well as we feeling the same way.

Hot Wheels ’16 Ecto-1 from the 2016 Ghostbusters 2-Pack (Passenger’s Side)
Several weeks ago we were introduced to the Hot Wheels ’16 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 from this newest Ghostbusters movie. It came as part of a 2-Pack which also featured the Ecto-2, a motorycle. While the motorcycle was incredibly disproportionate, as it was no where near 1:64 scale, the ’16 Ecto-1 was right in line with the ’84 Ecto-1 Hot Wheels casting.

Walmart and Toys R Us seem to be the only retailers carrying the Ghostbusters 2-Pack with the ’16 Ecto-1 and the Ecto-2 Motorcycle. Walmart here in the U.S. is carrying it at the $9.94 price point which is over $2 cheaper than the $11.99 price point at Toys R Us. Both stores are carrying it in their Ghostbusters section versus the Hot Wheels section so if you haven’t found it yet, check there.
As you can see, the details on this one are pretty good and fall in line with the quality we’ve seen in the #Hot Wheels Entertainment Line. The #Real Riders, metal base and quality tampos are all top notch.

Hot Wheels ’16 Ecto-1 from the 2016 Ghostbusters 2-Pack (Rear)
As for the actual car the Hot Wheels ’16 Ecto-1 is based on — the 1980s Cadillac Hearse Wagon — well, some might think its a jalopy, but you have to remember that the classic 1959 Cadillac Ambulance the original Ecto-1 was based on was a 25-year-old car when the first movie premiered in 1984. It wasn’t until after the movie that it gained its iconic status and became a classic. Granted, that 1950s styling does help its case.
Some collectors have also been wondering why this casting also bears the “Ecto-1” name versus Ecto-2, -3, or something similar … well, apparently the new movie takes place as if Ghostbusters I and II never took place. Suffice to say, it sounds like we won’t be seeing any character or Ecto-1 cameos, dang! Well, at least we get to see an updated Slimer. It just wouldn’t be Ghostbusters without him.
As we mentioned earlier, The new Ghostbusters movie is out today! Check it out, let us know what you think. There is a good chance we will be seeing the Hot Wheels ’16 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 again.
