Night Breed 5-Pack: NISSAN SKYLINE R32

The Night Breed 5-Pack has to be one of the coolest Hot Wheels 5-Packs to ever hit the shelves. This 5-Pack was released in 2004 and contained 4 tuner cars and 1 pro-stock car. The best aspect: the cars featured the satin paint known as Spectrafrost before it was termed, “Spectrafrost”.

“Spectrafrost” came about in 2013 when it was revealed as the signature feature in the Hot Wheels Cool Classics line. Since Spectraflame paint is a shiny, translucent paint process, the opposite in a satin, opaque paint process was deemed worthy of a name polarizing to that of Spectraflame–hence, Spectrafrost. Between an exclusive plastic wheel known as the retro-slot wheel and the Spectrafrost paint, the vehicles in the Cool Classics line retailed for about $3 a piece. Almost a whole decade earlier, cars featuring the same paint retailed at the $1 price point (if you breakdown a $5 5-Pack).

I know, as a collector in 2004, that this paint feature stood out to me, prompting the purchase of this 5-Pack, which led me to start collecting the [casting that will be revealed on Friday].

Another casting that really stood out to me was the Nissan Skyline R32 from this pack. Wearing satin anti-freeze paint, this car stands out! Featuring the “CLONE” moniker, a signature of Hot Wheels Graphics Designer Mike McClone, this car is one of  many other #CARS FEATURING NAMES OF MATTEL EMPLOYEES. As we pointed out several days ago, the Nissan Skyline R32 casting has started to command some high prices on the secondary market as many of the releases are very desirable. This is one of them! 11 years ago, you had no problem finding this 5-Pack on the peghooks or shelves of your favorite retailer, now, this Skyline LOOSE commands anywhere from $15 to $35.
