12/6/2023 — The Daniel Arsham X Hot Wheels collaboration continues. A couple weeks ago, we got “Lap 1” which was the first drop in this series of items that carry an eroded look, making it seem as though they are some sort of relic unearthed from a future archeological site. The next two vehicles — the Eroded Deora II and the Arsham Porsche 356 Bonsai — drop Friday!
Arsham Porsche 356 Bonsai
Arsham, a known fan of 1:1 Porsches, has chosen another Porsche to be featured in this collaboration. This time, it’s the #Porsche 356 Speedster. What makes this one different is that it’s not eroded to the point of the others. Rather, the exterior looks to have remained unchanged — not calling for a new casting (made from silk stone) like the others. This one features an exterior deco replicates the welding lines and weathered aesthetic Arsham created, over a #ZAMAC body.
The interior is the unique part here. It is meant to replicate Arsham’s 1:1 Porsche 356 Bonsai which features an interior composed of indigo-dyed fabrics featuring boro patchwork sashiko-stitched lines — a Japanese textile.
Eroded Deora II
The Hot Wheels #Deora II gets recast for this collaboration — wooohoooo! Unfortunately, that “sunk-in” front windshield remains. That shouldn’t stop the Deora II fanatics when it comes to this drop as the “Eroded Deora II” features an “Arsham Bronze” exterior which has a really cool turquoise color to it.
The body is made from silk stone like the Porsche 930 and the Rodger Dodger from Lap 1. This one features crystallized erosions however that are colored in a metallic copper.
Each model will again come attached to a marbleized plinth surrounded by an acrylic case. These are meant to slot inside the eroded Hot Wheels Super Rally Case (resembling the 1968 version) sold with the Porsche 930. The case is meant to hold all 8 vehicles in this artist series in their acrylic cases. With the 356 and Deora II, it will be half complete. See photo from Lap 1 below.
This collaboration is a huge step for Mattel Creations which goes beyond decorating existing castings with new graphics. These silk stone castings are a first for the brand and the eroded elements make it clear this is a Daniel Arsham piece — merging the Hot Wheels collecting world with that of contemporary art.
Here is the pricing and links for LAP 2 of the collection (available 12/8/2023):
- Eroded Deora II — $70
- Arsham Porsche 356 Bonsai — $70

Pathetic.
How so?
There are thousands of “corroded” Hot Wheels at flea markets and thrift stores across the country, and way less than $70. Like pre shredded jeans and frayed ball caps this is just plain dumb. Next up, the five year olds “Hammer Smash!” series…
If you don’t like, why not simply not buy? Pairing a nostalgic brand with a famed artist appeals to a number of folks. It’s a concept, not a used product as you described. I am personally all-in on these as I think they are pretty awesome. And as far the “hammer smash” series… it’s already been done and I’m in on those too! Hahahahaha. https://orangetrackdiecast.com/2020/04/03/hot-wheels-crushed-cars-coming-soon-as-part-of-the-monster-trucks-line-heres-you-exclusive-look/
How ironic that Mr. Arsham is from the same place I was born. Artist? Not in my book. I know this is a no win conversation, but I was there when the first Hot Wheels hit the pegs, and it was magical. Todays stuff… meh. The real artist was Larry Wood!
Daniel Arsham is partially color blind so that’s why his art leans on more gray and white colors. His ideas are very artistic.
Looks to have that digitized tampo printing that (unfortunately) has become quite common on a lot of premium level cars. I would really expect a lot more for a $70 piece. You’re paying for the name and packaging here, not the quality of the diecast…
$70 is a little steep for each but I’ll be online waiting like others. It really would be nice to production numbers on the box.
All these people complaining… I have the porsche 930, rally case, stickers, rodger dodger, and the Deora. People will complain about any and everything but whatever makes you happy, buy that.
