Showcase

Wheelie Cool! STUBBY BOB is the latest Hot Wheels vehicle nobody asked for, but every ROADKILL fan needs!

The Hot Wheels #Roadkill collection was coming along nicely. A “before & after” Rotsun set, and the General Mayhem Charger — man, the family was good. Along comes “Stubby Bob” into the family gathering, and it’s like your crazy uncle showing up … uninvited. But then again, the whole impromptu nature of it is very fitting for the show.

I have my finger on the pulse of the Hot Wheels collecting community and have heard requests for the “Blasphemi” ’55 Chevy Bel Air Gasser, Crusher Impala, Draguar, and Muscle Truck, but I don’t recall anyone seriously asking for Stubby Bob. Vintage trucks from the ’50s just aren’t largely popular with the bulk of today’s Hot Wheels collectors — especially frankenstein’d ones with a short wheel base, mismatched wheels, and a #Blown Engine in the back. So whoever green-lighted this one must have some major cojones for taking a chance on something different! The gamble seems to have worked as only a limited number remain…

The 1:1 1950 Ford F-650 dump truck was found on a farm in Georgia in episode 44 of Roadkill, and became a reoccurring project car for Finnegan and Freiburger in the TV series. Throughout the numerous episodes “Stubby Bob” has appeared in, the guys would eventually chop the wheel base significantly, and then stick a 454 Chevy big-block engine behind the cab. Upgrades to the suspension occurred & and a wheelie bar was mounted. This allowed the guys to pull some epic wheelies — Stubby Bob’s M.O. — all while making #Stubby Bob a popular car/character with Roadkill fans.

The Hot Wheels casting is dubbed the #’50 Ford F6 Roadkill Stubby Bob which is obviously a mouthful to say, but I get the name has to be that for legal reasons. Long name aside, this casting — designed by the very talented & incredibly humble, Brendon Vetuskey — is crazy awesome. The body lines on the cab are crisp, the 454 Chevy engine is stacked, and even the red roll cage surrounding it offers a nice color break. Sure, dual skinny #Real Riders in the back would have taken this to the next level, but I don’t believe the ability to do that exists in the currently wheel tool bank at Mattel. Take a look at the engine detail below. The sculpt is as detailed as we’ve seen on a premium car, and even the belt components on the back got detailed.

Currently, #Stubby Bob is still available through the MotorTrend Promo but only a limited number of vehicles last before the promo is over. For $44.99, you get a one-year subscription to MotorTrend OnDemand — which includes every episode of Roadkill — AND this Stubby Bob vehicle by Hot Wheels.

Honestly, it’s great to see a vehicle as unique as #Stubby Bob come off the screen and into your diecast collection. The casting and execution are done extremely well, and this is a must for any Roadkill fan. For Hot Wheels collectors like me, adding Stubby Bob to the growing #Roadkill collection is extremely satisfying as I watch the Roadkill family take shape. Time to go watch some more episodes OnDemand and see what could be coming next!
