From a collector’s standpoint, the focus of the 2018 #Walmart Exclusive, #MOPAR Series is on the all-metal, ’70 Dodge Power Wagon. Its a great truck casting that I admit buying my fair share of when I saw a couple sets on the pegs one night. The other casting I bought multiples of? Well, that would be the #Custom ’77 Dodge Van. That blue paint and those nice clean graphics on a casting I collect, are always a win-win for this collector.
But why are those graphics so clean? I have bought every release of the Hot Wheels #Custom ’77 Dodge Van and they never appear to be this clean — outside of the premium lines. So why are they so clean? The answer to why can be summed up in one word: Thailand.
The Hot Wheels plant in Thailand is the location that manufactured the 2018 #Walmart Exclusive #MOPAR Series. Compare this series to any other Themed Assortment (basic-level) series and you’ll notice there is a superior quality about the tampos. That’s because the majority of those other Themed Assortment series are produced in Malaysia. Its also the same reason that we were able to have a premium casting like the ’70 Dodge Power Wagon in a basic-level series: Thailand. So thanks to the Mattel plant they term “MBK” as this #Custom ’77 Dodge Van came out looking exceptionally nice from a manufacturing standpoint
Everything from the premium tampos, to the series card art, to the fact that I collect four of the eight castings in this series; makes me glad that I was able to find it at my local Walmart store. I had more luck finding the #MOPAR Series at Walmart, than the second wave of the HW 50th Throwback series at Target — another #2018 Hot Wheels series in which the #Custom ’77 Dodge Van appeared. Thanks to my friend who grabbed the Throwback Dodge van for me, you’re able to see below that both ’77 Dodge #Vans for 2018 had great designs.
Not much more can be said about the #MOPAR Series #Custom ’77 Dodge Van other than, I’m a fan — as if you haven’t gotten that already. If I had to state my favorite from this series, this would be it. Yes, even more so than the Power Wagon. Everything from that light blue paint, to the grayed out #5-Spoke Wheels, to the red/white/blue #MOPAR motif; make this #Dodge van one that I couldn’t wait to open up and add to my collection.
