Fresh off the pegs of my local Target is the Volkswagen SP2 from the 2016 Hot Wheels Retro Style Series. This isn’t Target’s first rodeo with retro Hot Wheels products as they took on several retro-branded products from 2006 to 2007. The first go-’round included vehicles and track sets based on the Flying Customs, Super Chromes and even the motorized Sizzlers. 10 years later, Target has decidedly gone retro once again as we are seeing a whole line associated with this Retro Style Series. So far we have seen 8 vehicles along with 8 more scheduled for release in August. These are being found on special endcaps versus the normal aisle where Hot Wheels are. We have also seen a few track sets associated with this special endcap including the return of the Sto&Go playset — a fold up mini city that hasn’t been released in over 20 years!
Among the first wave of 8 in the Retro Style Series, is my personal favorite of the bunch, the Volkswagen SP2. The 1:1 Volkswagen SP2 was a sports car was produced and sold by #VW exclusively in Brazil from 1972-1976. The “SP” stands for the Sao Paulo municipality in Brazil whereas the “2” refers to it being the 2nd generation of the SP model. The SP1’s poor performance led to its demise after only 88 units. Volkswagen then redesigned it producing the SP2 for 5 years, selling 11,123 units of this Brazilian sports car.
The Hot Wheels Volkswagen SP2 has only been around since 2010 and has had only a handful of releases since. To this collector, this Retro Style Series version is the best yet as the VW racing graphics put it in a class with other #Rally Cars.
