December is here which usually means, so are the Hot Wheels Christmas cars. While in the past there have been Holiday Rods, Holiday Hot Rods, and other cars of the Christmas variety, it was the Holiday Rods from 2004 to 2009 that proved to be the most collector-friendly. Armed with simplistic graphics in multiple color releases along with metal bodies/bases and Real Riders wheels, these Holiday classics sold well at the $4.99 price-point.
Today, we hitch a ride with the Ghost of Christmas-Past and shoot back to 2006 when the Holiday Rods from that year contained ’70 Plymouth Superbird which was released in 4 colors. Regrettably, I did not pick up all four colors of the Superbird back then so I am slowly acquiring these all online when I can find them for at or less than the original price-point (shipped).
The only one of the four that I have gotten so far is the metalflake gold version with matte black roof. While it is isn’t as far removed from Christmas as the magenta version — seriously, what does magenta have to do with Christmas? — the only thing the gold version shares with the holiday is its color. So what it lacks in Christmas connection, is what drives its lure to collectors. This Superbird is a nice, simple & classic design in a very classic color. One that is a must-have if you’re a Superbird collector.
