Mattel 80th Anniversary 5-Pack dresses Hot Wheels original designs in ruby red

It’s Mattel’s 80th Anniversary and they’re celebrating in ruby red fashion! Hot Wheels, Barbie, and a wealth of other brands by Mattel will have special releases for the remainder of 2025. We’ve already seen the Kool Kombi in a special 80th anniversary deco in Pop Culture this year. We also had a single release of the Mattel Dream Mobile in the H & J mainline cases along with a special carded release seen in the video below.

They other day I filmed a video showcasing the Mattel 80th Anniversary Hot Wheels 5-Pack. In it are five Hot Wheels original designs that are definitely worthy of wearing the Mattel 80th paint. The decos are not over-the-top as it’s the packaging that really signifies the 80th anniversary. The decos have subtle nods to the 80th in them.

Bad to the Blade

Yes, it’s a Hot Wheels original design — or “fantasy car” as some collectors like to call it — but it’s also a real car that is parked in Mattel’s lobby right now. The jet fighter style car debuted in 2012 as part of the Hot Wheels test facility campaign where Hot Wheels became more of a life-sized kind of idea. The is no doubt that HWTF inspired what Legends is today. If you’ve ever seen the real #Bad to the Blade in person, it’s super cool. This release comes in this Mattel 80th anniversary deco.

Twin Mill

No explanation needed here, but I’ll do it anyways! The #Twin Mill is a redline-era casting that was the first 1:1 car built for Hot Wheels. The red deco is cool on this with the striping on top and the flames. No 80th anniversary logo, but a car that is definitely worth of being in this 5-pack celebrating the company that allows kids (and adults) to imagine and play in all types of scales — including 1:1.

Bone Shaker

So, the first two vehicles in this 5-pack have 1:1s, and so does the Bone Shaker. I’m not sure there is a car that turns more heads at Hot Wheels Legends Events than the #Bone Shaker. This release is the closed-roof version of the legendary Larry Wood design from 2006. With Bone Shaker on the sides, this is another classic version for the many Bone Shaker nuts collectors out there!

El Segundo Coupe

The #El Segundo Coupe is a the newest casting in this 5-pack. This one was designed by former Hot Wheels Designer, Sonny Fisher in 2023. This design came after the Clip Coupe which was essentially based off of the silhouette of this design. Later this year, we will see this design evolve once again as the El Segundo Rallye will be released as part of the 2025 mainline. Such a cool casting with vintage racing design cues! It’s inclusion here makes me wonder… The other three vehicles in this 5-pack have been built in 1:1 scale for the Hot Wheels garage. Could we possibly see the El Segundo Coupe in 1:1 scale anytime soon?

Custom Otto

Everyone’s favorite artwork-turned-reality car is the #Custom Otto. This car headlined Redline-era packaging for 40 years before it was made into a Hot Wheels vehicle for the 40th Anniversary of Hot Wheels in 2008. Drawn by packaging artist, Otto Kuhni, this car embraces several design cues from late ’60s muscle. This release is in that ruby red paint with flames on the side with a nod to Otto and the 80th anniversary on the back.
