Lickety-Split! The story behind the cartoon wolf logo on this 2024 Hot Wheels BONE SHAKER

You will undoubtedly see a graphic on a Hot Wheels car and wonder, “why is this there?” Surprisingly enough, there usually is a reason and/or a story behind it. That is the case with a #2024 Hot Wheels #Multi-Pack Exclusive. The #Bone Shaker gets a new colorway for 2024 in a metalflake mint green with a large cartoon wolf on it’s doors, bringing all sorts of Tex Avery nostalgia to those old enough to remember.

When it comes to Hot Wheels, you’ll see fictional sponsor logos that reference the names of Mattel employees. You get a little of that here. The employee? Hot Wheels Design Manager, Craig Callum — who also does some casting design himself. You’ll see his Hot Wheels castings start to roll out in 2024 as his first casting, the Mo-Stash is out now.

Craig — you can follow him on Instagram as @cforcraig — is a hot rod enthusiast and a de facto, lone wolf. He says, “my hot rod friends kept wanting me to join their club but I said, ‘I don’t like clubs’. In the hot rod and motorcycle world that makes you in the Lone Wolf club”. He owns an old, red Ford Coupe (with a wolf as the hood ornament) which he has dubbed “Old Red Riding Hood” to fit within his take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale.

From a young age, Craig loved the work of Tex Avery — the well-known cartoonist and voice actor of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Droopy, Tom & Jerry (among others), and of course, Red Hot Riding Hood and The Wolf. Craig paints wolves in this cartoonish style on his helmets, and has adopted the colloquial phrase, “Lickety-Split” which means, “go fast”. A friend noticed the exceptionally long tongue on one of the helmets, said the phrase, and said it sounds like a term that would be used in a Tex Avery cartoon. Craig adopted it as his motto and now also appears on his helmet.

Hot Wheels Graphic Designer, Andrés Andrieu — who started at Mattel in 2022 with Callum — took notice of Craig’s personal branding and decided to incorporate it into a Hot Wheels design. The “lone wolf” adorns the doors of this #Bone Shaker — a casting that has seen it’s fair share of decos, with over 120 variants out there! The tribute to Craig doesn’t stop there. His initials “CC” and his car’s #43 are behind the wolf, with the phrase “Craig’s Classics” in white just below that.

As a collector, it’s always fun to hear the stories behind your favorite Hot Wheels so I thank Andrés and Craig for sharing this one. This #Bone Shaker could easily be just another rendition in a multi-pack, but instead, it’s infused with some design team flavor.

  1. thanks brad, some more info,
for those wko dont know, this is not the first vehicle inspired by tex avery’s “big bad wolf”
the RLC 55 gaser, commonly called ” the flying tiger” ( as Van, explained) is actually wearing, the wolfs grin, with the moon eye’s logo used in place of his blood shot eye’s..
tex’s artwork was used on many air craft during WW II, from piper cubs, to b-17’s
you might also do a search on the tex avery title” Red hot riding hood”. for a lil different telling of lil red riding hood.;-)
    TAZ

  2. Thank you for the back story on this one! You can bet I will grab the first one I see for my Bone Shaker collection.

  3. Ya know – as soon as I saw the picture of Craig with the red neckerchief, I knew exactly who he was.

He’s a former partner of Amy Shore, now married to someone else. She’s an incredible photographer and her style is so distinctive, it’s easy to spot her work.

Cool to see him on the Hot Wheels team. Maybe he’ll get a nice replica of that old jalopy he’s got.
