10/12/2023 — The next Hot Wheels collaboration is here. This time, it’s with American contemporary artist, Daniel Arsham. Arsham, based out of New York City, is known for taking modern items and casting them in sand, stone, ash, and other geological materials. These items carry an eroded look, making it seem as though they are some sort of relic unearthed from a future archeological site.
Arsham, a known fan of 1:1 Porsches, has chosen the #Porsche 930 and the Mattel-favorite, #Rodger Dodger as his first two castings to be released in this series which will apparently consist of four drops — or “laps”. Each eroded model will be cast in silkstone — a modern composite material which has a silk feel and the solidity of marble — a first for the Hot Wheels brand!
On top of that, each model will come attached to a marbleized plinth surrounded by an acrylic case INSIDE an eroded Hot Wheels Super Rally Case resembling the 1968 version. The case it meant to hold all 8 vehicles in this artist series in their acrylic cases. See photo below.
This collaboration is a huge step for Mattel Creations which goes beyond decorating existing castings with new graphics. These silkstone castings will be a first for the brand and the eroded elements make it clear this is a Daniel Arsham piece — merging the Hot Wheels collecting world with that of contemporary art.
The first lap of this collection will debut at a public event at 45 Grand Street in New York City, October 21 & 22 (12-7PM), and will be for sale on the Mattel Creations website Friday, October, 27th, 2023. No word yet on price or how these will bundle, but you can expect this to be a very popular release from Hot Wheels and Mattel Creations.
