COLOR REVEAL’D! Uncovering the newest variant of the Hot Wheels DEORA II

Chances are, you’ve encountered the Hot Wheels #Color Reveal containers before. Unless you’re a collector of a specific #Unlicensed Hot Wheels casting — or a super duper completist — you probably haven’t even bothered to pick one up off the shelf. I’ve bought a few of these 2-packs since Color Reveal debuted in 2021 in order to obtain the latest releases of some of my favorite Hot Wheels original designs like the #Bassline, #Turbine Time, #Blind-Sided, and #Deora II.

At Target, these 2-pack containers retail for $10.99 so it is rather pricey to obtain a new basic version of the casting you’re after. Most collectors would rather spend the money on a premium release, but for a casting collector, it is just more money spent in order to complete a casting collection. When I do find a Color Reveal release I want to buy at Target, I will pull up Amazon’s listing — which is typically $2 cheaper at $8.99 — and have the cashier price-match it to save a few bucks.

In this particular 2-pack: #2023 Hot Wheels #Color Reveal Series 2, Set #10, the #Deora II is paired with another Hot Wheels original design in the #Bad to the Blade. The color of the coating on the cars matches the cap of the canister they come in, and the #10 code can be found printed on top to alleviate any guesswork when it comes to what is inside since that aligns with the order the vehicles are shown on the packaging.

The vehicles themselves come with a gloppy, single-color coating that looks kind of like that first “custom” Hot Wheels car you ever made as a kid. It’s thick, covers everything, and the wheels don’t even spin. For collectors, it’s super ugly, yet somewhat appealing by giving off unfinished prototype vibes. For kids, its a fun, 5-minutes activity to uncover what lies beneath the chonky coating.

As you can see below, the #Deora II — despite its iconic silhouette — looks a bit off as the blue coating fills every casting line, and even clumps up in area like on top of the rear spoiler. Time to uncover what new variant of the Deora II is beneath the blue #Color Reveal coating.

BOOM! I was not expecting a mint green #Deora II underneath that blue coating. Its great to see this 23-year-old casting in a new color. The mint green variant is now the newest Deora II out there, however — I am sad to report — this is the old basic casting that features the “pushed-in” windshield and rough casting edges. **sighs** I totally would have expected the standard #Color Shifters casting with molded surfboards to be used here, but somehow this old tooling of the casting is back from the dead — some removable surfboards would have helped ease the pain. I digress…

The last thing to do was to put the #Deora II in the freezer for about a minute and see what color it turned while cold. The Deora II on the package was purple so that was my guess, and sure enough, my better judgement netted me a victory in correctly guessing something when no one was around. 🙂

The rich, deep purple color is somewhat remarkable considering I grew up in the late ’80s / early ’90s when the color changing Hot Wheels barely changed hue. Both the mint green while warm and the purple while cold are nice colors. Given that my Hot Wheels room is over 75˚F most of the time, I am venturing to guess this one will revert back to mint green and stay that way for the duration of the time that it is in my collection.

When I look back and how I solely bought this 2-pack for the #Deora II, and how it was rather pricey, it is kind of nice to “play with” this one the way it was intended and net a new variant for my Deora II collection.
